NCAA issues statement following Supreme Court Gambling Decision

Shortly after news spread of the decision that should allow states to make individual decisions on whether or not to legalize sports betting, the NCAA responded.

“Today the United States Supreme Court issued a clear decision that PASPA is unconstitutional, reversing the lower courts that held otherwise,” NCAA chief legal officer Donald Remy said via official release on Monday.  “While we are still reviewing the decision to understand the overall implications to college sports, we will adjust sports wagering and championship policies to align with the direction from the court.”

In November, the NCAA  released a study on collegiate wagering that “surveyed more than 22,000 current college athletes across all three NCAA divisions about their attitudes toward and engagement in various gambling activities, including sports wagering.” The 2016 results indicated that 24.3 percent of male athletes polled had participated in sports wagering, with 8.9 percent of them doing so on a monthly basis.
