Students who oppose naming a Republican Nebraska Senator the next University of Florida President are making their voices heard.

Ben Sasse emerged last month as the lone finalist for the job. Students have been hosting protests on campus ever since, including one on Tuesday as the senator met publicly with the Board of Trustees.

Inside Emerson Hall, many spoke out against his candidacy.

"I think the message from the university community is quite clear, we as a whole do not want Dr. Sasse as the next president of our institution."

Junior Bryn Taylor said "political meddling" has turned the college into a "laughing stock."

"For people obsessed with the rankings so much, surprisingly little thought seems to be put in how in choosing a politician with more experience taking away peoples rights than being in a classroom will affect our status."

Sasse's selection came after a new state law allowed the search to be conducted in private, but many of those against his candidacy claim they wanted more transparency.

After public comment, Sasse was interviewed by members of the Board of Trustees who then voted unanimously in favor of hiring him.

The Florida university system's Board of Governors will have the final say..
